Institute for Educational Management and Technologies

The Institute for Educational Management and Technologies (IBB-HSG) has its origins in the Institute for Business Education (IWP-HSG). In 2003, with support from the Gebert Rüf Foundation, the Institute established the "swiss competence centre for innovations in learning" (SCIL) for technology-supported teaching and learning approaches. In 2020, the IBB-HSG was newly founded as part of the digital transformation. Since then, the institute has been focused on artificial intelligence, human-machine interactions, and the design of educational processes. The institute works at the interface of digital transformation, network economics, data-based education management and digital competences, in particular AI literacy and dealing with generative AI.

Since August 2021, Prof. Dr Andrea Back, Professor of Business Informatics at the University of St. Gallen, has been an additional Institute Director at the IBB-HSG. She leads educational offers for schoolchildren at Smartfeld in the Startfeld innovation network. Prof. Back also focuses on projects in the field of digital strategies, transformations and innovations. And since February 2023, the Board of Directors has been additionally expanded by Prof. Dr. Patrick Emmenegger, Professor of Political Science at the University of St. Gallen. He is also head of the GOVPET Leadinghouse, a competence centre that focuses on the political governance of vocational and professional education and training systems and is funded by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI). Since then, the Future Work & Skills Lab has been established at IBB.
